Big bucks spent in 2015 local elections

Another Schenectady mayoral race, another notable spending run.

Incumbent Democrat Gary McCarthy spent more than $190,000 toward his successful re-election campaign over Republican challenger Roger Hull, who spent about $91,000.

Their total — over $281,000 — is well above what supervisor candidates spent in more highly populated Colonie. And it didn’t, ultimately, result in more voter turnout — about 8,700 on Nov. 3 — than places like Bethlehem, with 10,300 votes logged for the rivals for supervisor. (There were third-party Schenectady primaries).

In Troy, candidates in the four-way mayoral race, plus a hotly contested primary, spent $143,000.

The 2015 McCarthy-Hull spending tops their 2011 spending, when the foes wracked up a total of $258,000, but in that case Hull was the bigger spender — about $167,000 to $90,500. More than 9,500 voted in that general election, a much closer result.
